![]() ![]() In Pressed for Time, Judy Wajcman explains why we immediately interpret our experiences with digital technology as inexorably accelerating everyday life. But isn’t the sole purpose of the smartphone to give us such quick access to people and information that we’ll be free to do other things? Isn’t technology supposed to make our lives easier? This widespread perception that life is faster than it used to be is now ingrained in our culture, and smartphones and the Internet are continually being blamed. Most of us complain that there aren’t enough hours in the day and there are too many e-mails in our thumb-accessible inboxes. The technologically tethered, iPhone-addicted figure is an image we can easily conjure. Her talk will cover the major themes of her new book, Pressed for Time: The Acceleration of Life in Digital Capitalism (University of Chicago Press). Her books include The Social Shaping of Technology, Feminism Confronts Technology, TechnoFeminism and The Politics of Working Life. Judy Wajcman is the Anthony Giddens Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics. ![]() ![]() So we have Taylor, a man-hater, untrusting woman whose life has taken a path she feels the need to run from-her boyfriend got married to his REAL girlfriend over the weekend and she finds out at work when someone shows her a news article about it. ![]() I love reading about men taking up the reins in a missing father role.īut, I feel there could have been so much more depth to these feelings that just weren't described well by the author. The positives of the story are that this was a different plot than I am used to, so I was super excited to get to witness a come-together or sorts between two complicated and burned people. So, if you want to know why I rated so low, read through my spoilers. I really don't like giving negative reviews, but there were just so many things that were wrong with this story, and I feel like I'm the only one who felt this way when I look at the other rave reviews. I am hoping it was so rough because it is an ARC and it hadn't gone through the finale rigamarole of editing, because it really needed it. I received this as an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I have never made so many notes in a Kindle edition before. Now it is up to Bill and Benny to find and rescue him…Based on a decade of research drawn from archives around the world, interviews with fellow shipmates and POWs, and half-forgotten letters stashed away in attics, The Jersey Brothers is "a captivating tour-de-force" ( San Antonio Express-News ) that whisks readers from America's front porches to Roosevelt's White House to the battlefronts of the Pacific. But this protection plan backfires when Barton is sent to Manila and listed as wounded and missing after a Japanese attack. Barton, the youngest, gets a plum commission in the Navy Supply Corps because his mother wants him out of harm's way. Benny is the gunnery and antiaircraft officer on USS Enterprise, one of the few ships to escape Pearl Harbor and, by the end of 1942, the only aircraft carrier left in the Pacific to defend against the Japanese. Bill, a naval intelligence officer, is tapped by FDR to set up and run his secret map room in the White House basement. They are three brothers, all Navy men, who end up coincidentally and extraordinarily at the epicenter of three of the war's most crucial moments. This extraordinary adventure of three brothers at the center of the most dramatic turning points of World War II is "liable to break the hearts of Unbroken fans, and it's all true" ( The New York Times ). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() More than a year before the election of John F.
